Bristle Type

This listing is for a coarse, stiff horsehair flat head brush and a short stiff rounded head paintbrush.

The Flat Head Paintbrush:

  • Has a black bamboo handle that is 7" in length with a leather hanging strap.
  • The bristle is 2" in length.
  • The bristle has a flat shape, with rounded corners.

The key to this brush is having a short, coarse bristle, that is shaped fairly flat. I designed the bristle head shape with the idea of maximizing the area of contact with the surface of the painting and creating stiff bristles that can hold up to more vigorous mark-making. The coarseness of the bristle makes this brush an excellent choice for glazing, creating texture and subtle lines - It was designed to work with Cold Wax, but can be used with a variety of other media.

The Rounded Head Paintbrush:

  • Has a ribbed bamboo 7.25" handle
  • The bristle head has a rounded shape and is 2" in length
  • It has a leather hanging strap and natural shell embellishment on the end

The Ribbed Handle Flat Paintbrush:

  • Has a ribbed bamboo 7.25" handle
  • The bristle head has a rounded shape and is 2" in length
  • It has a leather hanging strap and natural shell embellishment on the end

This brush also has a coarse, stiff bristle, but has a rounded head shape. This allows the brush to splay and move across the painting's surface easily. It can also handle thicker media, such as gel mediums, acrylic, and cold wax.

  • Clean-Up Information:

    • Use a common art solvent (such as odorless paint thinner) to remove paint/cold wax, then wash with a mild soap such as Dove or Murphy's Oil Soap to remove any residual media.
    • Use your fingers/palm to rub the wire bristles to remove the residual media from the brush head.
    • Never leave sitting in-solvent
    • Make sure to thoroughly clean and rinse off the solvent. Leaving solvent on without removing it with water and soap can damage the brush
