Black Horsehair Sumi-e Paint Brush

This unique and beautiful brush was made with bamboo root and black horsehair. The bamboo handle has a ceramic ferrule with a sgraffito Koi fish design carved onto it. The black horsehair is a wiry, course, has great flex, strong spring and will make a wide variety of marks, from wide/dynamic to very fine. The horsehairs have natural tips, and the bristle head shape lends itself to making fine dry brush lines.

The brush has:

• A leather hanging strap with a handpainted ceramic bead
• The ferrule is ceramic and has a sgraffito koi fish 

Traditional Sumi-e style bristle head:

• The Black Horsehair is 5.5" in length
• The Handle is 12" in length

My brushes are made to create a vast array of marks. When I make a brush I think about all aspects of the tool: how it looks, how it feels in the hand and how it paints - to ensure that the end product is a true "fine art tool".
