This is a gorgeous, large brush with a natural super-premium white horsehair bristle. White horsehair bristle is special in general, this one, in particular, is stunning. I only have one like this, that is so long and has beautiful natural tips.
I waited a long time to make a brush using this horsehair, it is the only one of this type of bristle that I have, so I wanted to make sure it would be special. I hope the love, care, and attention to detail that went into making this brush shows :)
Because it is so special, I waited a long time to make a brush using it. I knew when this ferrule came out of the kiln that this was the one I would use with this horsehair! I painted the small school of fish on the ferrule.
You might ask, "why is this white horsehair so special"? Because white horsehair like this is not common, it is softer and more absorbent than other colors (coarseness and spring vary by color as well). The 9" bristle length is also unusual. This particular type of bristle is what is used to make larger brushes in Asia, similar, in size and style, to the one I have made here.
The white horsehair bristle comes to a natural taper and has a slight ombre color change towards the end of the brush head.
The 16.5" handle on this brush was made with black bamboo. It has a satiny, smooth finish that is the perfect thickness for a brush this size. It also has a leather hanging strap and handpainted porcelain bead.
Brush Specifications:
- A leather hanging strap with handpainted porcelain bead
- The ferrule is stoneware with handpainted fish
Traditional Sumi-e style bristle head:
- The super-premium white horsehair is 9" in length
- The bamboo handle is 16.5" in length
My brushes are made to create a vast array of marks. When I make a brush I think about all aspects of the tool: how it looks, how it feels in the hand, and how it paints - to ensure that the end product is a true "fine art tool". This one danced inside my head for some time before it was born. It had to be special, I think it is.
