How to Clean and Care for Your Brushes and Tools

Taking care of your brushes and tools ensures they perform at their best and last for years. Whether you’re working with natural hair brushes, fiber brushes, or silicone tools, proper cleaning and storage will keep them in excellent condition.

Cleaning Natural Hair Brushes

Natural hair brushes, such as horsehair and deer tail, are highly absorbent and delicate. Proper care prevents damage and maintains their spring, softness, and shape.

Steps for Cleaning:

  1. Rinse Immediately – After using ink or other water-based media, rinse your brush under lukewarm water. Never let pigment dry in the bristles.
  2. Use Mild Soap – Gently wash with a soft soap (like Dove or Murphy’s Oil Soap). Avoid harsh detergents.
  3. Massage Gently – Use your fingers to lightly massage the bristles, removing any residual medium.
  4. Condition Large Brushes (Optional) – For very large brushes, you can apply a small amount of hair conditioner to keep the bristles soft and prevent tangling. Gently comb through the bristles while the conditioner is in, then rinse thoroughly.
  5. Shape & Hang to Dry – Pat dry with a towel, reshape the bristles into a fine point, and always hang your brush bristles down to dry. This allows any remaining residue or moisture to move toward the tip, keeping it from settling deep in the ferrule, where it can cause buildup.

Tips:

  • Never soak the brush in water for long periods, as it can loosen the binding.
  • Avoid pressing or scrubbing the bristles, which can cause breakage and tangles.

Caring for Fiber Brushes

Fiber brushes are more textured and may hold pigment differently than hair brushes.

Steps for Cleaning:

  1. Rinse with water immediately after use.
  2. Use mild soap if residue remains.
  3. Rub the fibers gently between your fingers to loosen pigment.
  4. Dry thoroughly, then hang to dry if possible to prevent buildup at the base of the brush head.

Best Practice: Brush bristles can sometimes stain, but staining does not affect performance.

Cleaning Silicone Tools

Silicone tools are the easiest to care for because they don’t absorb media.

Steps for Cleaning:

  • Wipe or rinse with water right after use.
  • For dried paint, gently peel off the residue.
  • Wash with mild soap and water.

Tips:

  • Do not let paint dry completely if it’s acrylic or other permanent media.
  • Store flat or upright; silicone will not warp under normal use.

Long-Term Brush Care

  1. Always Hang to Dry: Whenever possible, hang brushes bristle-side down. This prevents moisture and pigment from collecting at the base, which extends the life of the brush.
  2. Storage: When not drying, store brushes flat or hanging. For brushes with leather straps, hanging is the best option.
  3. Regular Maintenance: Even if a brush looks clean, occasional gentle washing with mild soap helps maintain softness and longevity.

Final Thoughts

Well-cared-for tools will reward you with consistent performance and durability. A few minutes of cleaning after each session preserves the integrity of natural hair brushes and keeps silicone tools ready for your next project.
