Handmade Pointed Stylus – Driftwood and Black Bamboo Sgraffito & Incising Tool

These handmade pointed stylus tools are designed for sgraffito, incising, scratching and detailed mark making. The fine pointed tips are especially effective for sgraffito work, allowing you to create clean, controlled lines, fine details and expressive scratched marks through the surface.

Each stylus has a fine metal point set into either a hand-finished driftwood or black bamboo handle. Three of the handles are made from individually selected pieces of driftwood. I shape and sand each one by hand, smoothing the surface and edges while retaining the natural curves, knots and variations of the wood. Stylus #1 is made with black bamboo and finished with a hand-wrapped copper detail near the tip.

The pointed tip can be used to create precise lines, incise into a surface, develop texture or add more gestural marks. 

These tools work well with encaustic, clay and ceramics, oil and cold wax, and other mixed media surfaces where scratching, incising or sgraffito techniques are used.

Care

Wipe the metal tip clean after use. Remove any remaining media before it dries on the point. Keep the wood or bamboo handle dry and do not soak.
