This handmade Sumi-e brush combines a full, naturally spreading bristle head with a distinctive burned bamboo handle and an organic wood ferrule. Designed for expressive ink painting and gestural mark-making, the brush produces a wide range of marks, from broad, fluid strokes to textured, broken lines and dense applications of ink.

The long, flexible bristles respond to changes in pressure, angle, and movement. Working with the side of the brush creates sweeping, layered marks, while pressing the bristles into the surface produces bold, textured impressions. The open bristle structure also allows for interesting variations in ink distribution, creating opportunities for both controlled and spontaneous mark-making.

The elongated bamboo handle features a dramatic burned pattern with natural variations in its surface. The organic wood ferrule complements the handle and provides a distinctive transition to the generously sized bristle head.
