This brush is made specifically for working with encaustic medium on a hot box. It can be used with other media, however, because it is silicone, it will hold up to the heat and has flexible bristles that make it ideal for working on a hot box.

This particular brush has 3 different types of silicone bristles, soft, semi-stiff, and stiff. The silicone bristles are very flexible and have a good amount of spring. The bristles vary in size and work by making reductive marks. The marks can be more controlled and or very organic.

This brush has a mix of wider and more narrow bristles as well

Brush Specifications:

  • The bamboo handle is 8" in length
  • the bristles are 2" in length

This silicone brush can make both controlled and more spontaneous or random feeling lines. The bristles are thick and stiff, so they can pull off or move the media around the hot plate.

How To Care For A Silicone Brush

To wash the brush (if you want to remove a specific color of wax that may be on the bristles from the last use) simply boil some water and immerse the tips of the bristles only in the hot water. Use a paper towel to remove the excess wax once the wax has melted/softened. After removing the majority of the wax, gently wash the brush bristles under warm water using a little liquid soap (be careful not to pull too hard on the bristles, but instead gently move them in a circular pattern under running water in the palm of your hand). This should remove most of the residual paint. The brush will also work better when the bristles are not covered with wax medium. So it is a good idea to occasionally clean them.

You can also remove excess wax by setting the bristles directly onto the hot box surface allowing some of the wax to melt off the bristles.

The silicone is heat resistant (made to withstand oven temps) and will not degrade when used on a hot surface.

Silicone brushes - So much fun!

As usual, the workmanship of Elizabeth's brushes is beautiful, with lovely creative touches, and they are a real pleasure to hold in the hand. The silicone brushes offer such unexpected spontaneous marks! I use them with acrylic paint, and since they are silicone, I do have to load them with paint frequently, but I love the marks they leave!! Such fun to use!
