This brush was made with my high-quality white, coarse horsehair. The bristle is super-coarse, has great flex, strong spring, and will make a wide variety of dynamic marks. The head of the brush is very full and thick, it will hold a lot of media. The bristle is 4" in length and has a blunt cut, which creates a brush that can handle thicker media. If you are looking for a brush that is ideal for glazing and making scrubby marks this is it.

The handle was made from a 110-year-old chalk brush made by:

  • JOHN L. WHITING AND SONS COMPANY v. CHARLES C. BARTON, JR.
  • November 12, 1909 - January 6, 1910

The ferrule is metal and has the manufacturer's name imprinted on it. The handle is hardwood and has the original paint. I added a leather hanging strap.

 The brush has:

  • A leather hanging strap

Traditional Sumi-e style bristle head:

  • The black horsehair is 4" X 3" in length/width
  • The handle (including the ferrule) is 4" in length

My brushes are made to create a vast array of marks. When I make a brush I think about all aspects of the tool: how it looks, how it feels in the hand, and how it paints - to ensure that the end product is a true "fine art tool".
